Police Uncover Drug Trafficking Ring Using Instagram 'Drop-Off' System
The Directorate of Narcotics Investigation of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police has uncovered an illicit drug trafficking operation that utilised the social media platform Instagram as its primary means of transaction. During the enforcement operation, officers arrested three suspects believed to have played active roles as distributors and packagers of various narcotics.
The three suspects, identified by their initials as AL, RJ, and AN, were apprehended in separate locations. Commissioner Indah Hartantiningrum, Head of Sub-Directorate 1 of the Narcotics Investigation Directorate, explained that the syndicate deliberately used social media to target consumers from various backgrounds, with a priority on teenagers.
‘We have successfully uncovered the illicit distribution of methamphetamine, marijuana, ecstasy, and synthetic tobacco. We secured three suspects in the West Jakarta and Tangerang areas. Their modus operandi involved using an Instagram account to target all groups, especially teenagers,’ Indah stated on Sunday.
The operation began with a public tip-off regarding suspected drug abuse activity in the Kalideres area of West Jakarta. The investigative team, conducting field surveillance, managed to arrest suspect RJ. During a search, officers discovered dozens of ready-to-distribute packets of synthetic tobacco.
Based on RJ’s confession, the illicit goods were sourced from suspect AN. The police then conducted a swift follow-up investigation and successfully apprehended AN at his residence. In addition to securing the suspect, officers also seized additional evidence and mobile phones used for transactions.
Intensive examination revealed that the suspects obtained their narcotics supply through a single Instagram account. The drugs were then broken down into smaller packages and marketed through their personal social media accounts.
To avoid face-to-face meetings with buyers and to evade law enforcement surveillance, the syndicate employed a ‘tempel’ (drop-off) system. The narcotics were placed at various hidden locations in the West Jakarta area according to a digital agreement with the buyer.
In a separate operation, Sub-Directorate 1 of the Narcotics Investigation Directorate also conducted a raid in the Benda area of Tangerang City. At this location, police arrested suspect AL at his home. During a search of AL’s room, officers discovered additional evidence.
Cumulatively, from the three suspects, the police seized a quantity of narcotics and related paraphernalia. The three suspects are currently being held at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Narcotics Investigation detention facility to undergo further investigation aimed at uncovering the wider network above them.
