Facing the potential surge in vehicles during the Lebaran exodus and return journeys in 2026, the National Police (Polri) has confirmed that several traffic management engineering strategies will be implemented. Schemes such as one-way systems and contraflow measures will be relied upon to alleviate congestion expected to exceed normal daily levels.

National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo emphasised that experience from previous years forms the basis for this year’s security and traffic management pattern development. Evaluation of the implementation of previous Ketupat Operations is cited as the primary foundation.

“Traffic engineering strategies will certainly continue to be implemented based on existing experience,” he stated whilst leading a cross-sectoral coordination meeting regarding operational readiness at the National Police Headquarters building in South Jakarta on Monday, 2 March 2026.

The traffic engineering measures being prepared include the implementation of one-way systems, contraflow, rest area management, and restrictions on three-axle vehicles. These schemes will be applied situationally depending on real-time vehicle volume developments on the ground.

Additionally, the National Police is preparing supplementary measures to prevent congestion at vulnerable points, including ferry terminals.

“Providing warnings and suspending traffic fines, implementing delay systems in ferry crossing areas, and diverting traffic flows are certainly the engineering measures we will implement,” he said.

Furthermore, the National Police Chief highlighted the economic impact of the exodus. Based on records from last year, money circulation from urban centres to regional areas reached approximately Rp137 trillion. This figure is considered to have a significant effect on the economy of people in the regions.

“Certainly, we hope that the security implementation of the 2026 Ketupat Operation can also succeed optimally, so that the multiplier effect on the economy in the regions will also have a significant impact,” he added.
