Police to question Baramuli

MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: The police are investigating alleged violations of electoral law involving former Supreme Advisory Council (DPA) chief A.A. Baramuli.

Provincial Elections Supervisory Committee (Panwaslu) chairman Aswanto reported Baramuli on Thursday to the police for allegedly falsifying some of the information required to support his candidacy for the Regional Representatives Council (DPD).

Aswanto said that Baramuli was not a Makassar resident who had been living in the provincial capital for the last three consecutive years, as required by the Law No. 12/2003 on general elections.

If found guilty, Baramuli could be sentenced to three months in jail or be fined up to Rp 6 million (US$705).

Aswanto, representing the elections committee, submitted a letter from the head of Menteng subdistrict, Central Jakarta, saying that Baramuli was a resident of Jakarta and possessed a Jakarta identity card.

However, Baramuli denied the allegation, saying he had lived in Makassar for 40 years ago, as proven by a certificate from the Makassar district chief, who said he resided on Jl. Penghibur, formerly known as Jl. Somba Opu, in the city. -- Antara
