Jakarta — Police are continuing to investigate the motives behind the reckless driving incident involving a black Toyota Calya on Gunung Sahari Street, Central Jakarta. The driver, identified as HM (24 years old), has been designated as a suspect and remains under examination.

AKBP Roby Heri Saputra, Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit (Kasatreskrim) of Central Jakarta Metro Police, stated that police are continuing their investigation into the suspect’s motives. The suspect’s actions have been deemed highly unusual, ranging from fleeing when stopped by officers to driving in the wrong direction and causing injuries to several other road users.

“The investigation is not yet complete. We will provide updates once we have completed our findings,” he said, as quoted on Friday, 27 February 2026.

Based on preliminary police assumptions, the suspect committed the act because he did not possess a driving licence (SIM) and vehicle registration certificate (STNK). Furthermore, the identification card used by the suspect was found to be forged, as was the vehicle registration plate (TNKB) on the car.

However, police do not rule out the possibility of other criminal offences that the suspect may be attempting to conceal. For this reason, police are continuing their investigation.

“Our suspicion is that there may be involvement of other persons, but we are still investigating,” said Roby.

The incident, which went viral on social media, occurred on Gunung Sahari Street in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, 25 February 2026, at approximately 17:15 Western Indonesian Time. Initially, officers in the field stopped the black Toyota Calya with registration plate D 1640 AHB. However, the driver and a woman inside ignored the officers and drove in the wrong direction on Gunung Sahari Street.

Police even fired warning shots to force the driver to stop. Eventually, the driver came to a halt after becoming trapped in traffic congestion. Several residents then attacked and smashed the windows of the black Toyota Calya.

Following police examination, two sharp weapons and one replica firearm were found inside the vehicle. Police also discovered a total of four registration plates, including the one affixed to the vehicle, which were found to be invalid.

According to the suspect’s statement, he was unaware of the presence of these items in the vehicle. However, police expressed doubt about this claim, given that the suspect’s statements were frequently inconsistent during police interrogation.
