Police still investigating Central Jakarta suicide

JAKARTA (JP): Central Jakarta police are still collecting information about the death of a man, who was believed to have committed suicide after wounding his girlfriend on Jl. Bungur Besar, Central Jakarta, on Saturday morning.

City Police spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna said yesterday that local police detectives expect that Vera Nilawati, 21, who is now recovering in hospital, will reveal significant information about the death of her lover Wisnu Zakaria Sapan, 36.

"We need more background from Vera," Iman said, adding that the woman is suffering from stab wounds in the stomach, thighs and arms.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman had refused to meet her lover's request to spend the night with him at a five-star hotel in Central Jakarta.

The police report said that the refusal had enraged the man, who apparently stabbed the woman before tearing his own stomach with the same dagger.

Wisnu, an Ujungpandang-based civil servant, was on a week-long holiday here to visit Vera, who is in Jakarta on a special course for air hostesses, said Iman.

According to Vera's roommate, whose identity is being withheld by the police, Vera left their house at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday. She returned shortly afterwards badly wounded.

While holding Vera, the woman saw a man, believed to be Wisnu, at a distance with a knife in his hands, Iman quoted Vera's roommate as saying.

"She also saw a passerby, who tried to run after Wisnu," Iman said, adding that he had no idea who the passerby was.

A few hours before the incident, Vera, Wisnu and Vera's roommate went to a nearby telecommunications shop, where Wisnu called his ailing brother in Ujungpandang, Vera was quoted by Iman as reporting to police.

From the shop, Vera and the roommate went back to their rented house while Wisnu returned to the hotel, the report said.

A few minutes later, Wisnu called Vera from his hotel.

According to Vera, Wisnu asked her to join him at his hotel, the roommate said.

"She rejected the request, saying that the man was a rude guy," Iman said quoted the witness as saying.
