Police State Report Against Saiful Mujani Over Alleged Treason Not Necessarily Leading to Criminal Proceedings
Jakarta, Kompas.com - Greater Jakarta Police have affirmed that the report of alleged treason against political analyst Saiful Mujani does not necessarily result in criminal proceedings.
Head of Public Relations for Greater Jakarta Police, Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto, stated that every report received undergoes an investigation stage to ascertain the presence or absence of criminal elements.
“If no criminal elements are found, there is insufficient evidence, no supporting witnesses, and the evidence is not related to criminal matters, the investigation can be halted or not proceeded to the prosecution stage,” Budi told reporters at Greater Jakarta Police headquarters on Friday (10/4/2026).
He emphasised that not all public reports automatically advance to the investigation phase.
The case involving Saiful Mujani is currently at the deepening stage by investigators.
Police, according to Budi, will examine all elements, including evidence and witness statements, before determining the next legal steps.
“The report will also undergo investigation and prosecution,” he said.
Furthermore, he explained that the police cannot reject reports submitted by the public.
However, the final outcome of the report heavily depends on the findings during the investigation process.
Previously, Saiful Mujani was reported to Greater Jakarta Police for alleged treason following his statement, deemed to incite the overthrow of President Prabowo Subianto, which went viral on social media.
The report was registered under number LP/B/2428/IV/2026/SPKT/POLDA METRO JAYA dated 8 April 2026. The complainant is recorded as Aliansi Masyarakat Jakarta Timur.
A clip of Saiful’s statement at a halal bihalal forum came under scrutiny after it was reposted by Presidential Staff Office Senior Expert Ulta Levenia on her personal Instagram account.
“This is terrifying, the provocation is extraordinary, this can be called treason, safeguard the Unitary Republic of Indonesia,” read the caption on the shared video.
In the 35-second video, Saiful stated that efforts to save Indonesia involve toppling President Prabowo.
He also mentioned that advising the President would not be effective.
“Advising Prabowo won’t work either. The only way is to bring him down. That’s saving, not saving Prabowo, but saving ourselves and this nation,” said Saiful.
