Police seize pirated electronics

MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: Makassar Police confiscated thousands of pirated electronic appliances bearing the Philips brand on Thursday following complaints from the company.

The police seized the electronic goods from one warehouse owned by CV Sinar Makmur on Jl. Lamputan and some stores and a supermarket in the business area of the city. Among the items confiscated were 1,693 lamps and 50 blenders.

Ganda Sianturi, the manager of Intellectual Property Officer and Internal Controller Philips Indonesia, said that the Dutch- based company had suffered losses of Rp 2 billion from the imitations.

He said that the pirating of electronic goods had been going on for a long time but his company lacked the human resources to identify them.

Makassar Police deputy Adj. Commr. Rifai said that his office had arrested three people, including Ferdy Cahyadi, 49, the owner of CV Sinar Makmur.

Ferdy said that he received the counterfeit goods from an electronics supplier in Jakarta. --JP
