Police seize over 30,000 bullets

YOGYAKARTA: Yogyakarta Police seized on Friday over 30,000 bullets recovered from a house in Ambarukmo village, Sleman regency in Yogyakarta.

Depok Military Commander Capt. Inf. Sujud said the bullets were classified into two caches -- 12.7 millimeters caliber bullets used for heavy machine guns and 7.62 caliber bullets for smaller types of guns.

"They are no longer used nowadays, although this type may still suitable for today's gun," Sujud told reporters at the digging site while showing the 12.7 millimeters caliber bullets.

According to Sujud, such bullets were mostly used during Indonesia's post-independence era between 1945 to 1970.

The bullets were first found by construction worker Winarto, 28, who reported the discovery to the local police.

"I found the first bullet in the afternoon after digging for some 50 centimeters. I kept digging and found more bullets inside the soil. I had collected some four containers of bullets before my superior told me to stop digging in case there might be live ammunition that could explode," Winarto told The Jakarta Post. --JP
