Police Seize 98 Undocumented Birds at Bakauheni Port

Personnel from the Bakauheni Port Area Police (KSKP) have seized 98 birds suspected of being transported without valid documents at the Seaport Interdiction area of Bakauheni Port, South Lampung, Lampung, on Wednesday (12/8).

KSKP Bakauheni Chief AKP Fransiskus Yepta Terang Ginting said the birds were found in the luggage compartment of a white Toyota Hiace with registration number BG 7026 TC at around 07.45 Western Indonesia Time.

“That is correct, KSKP Bakauheni personnel seized 98 birds found in the vehicle’s luggage compartment. The animals were being transported without valid documents,” said Fransiskus in South Lampung on Wednesday.

The vehicle was driven by RS (22), a resident of Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra. Based on initial examination, the birds were being transported from Ogan Ilir to Cikarang, Bekasi Regency, West Java.

Officers found the birds in four white fruit crates placed in the rear luggage compartment of the vehicle.

Fransiskus said his team has coordinated with the Animal, Fish and Plant Quarantine Office and the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) Bakauheni Working Area for further handling.

“The birds have subsequently been handed over to the quarantine authorities and an official handover report has been prepared,” he said.

In the operation, police also seized one white Toyota Hiace with registration number BG 7026 TC, four fruit crates used to carry the birds, and one vehicle registration document.

The transport of animals without valid documents is being handled under Article 88 letters a and c of Law Number 21 of 2019 concerning Animal, Fish and Plant Quarantine.

All seized birds have been handed over to the quarantine authorities to receive handling in accordance with applicable regulations.

“We will continue to conduct inspections and surveillance in the port area as an effort to prevent the movement of animals that are not accompanied by documents in accordance with regulations,” said Fransiskus.
