Police seek four men involved in rape case

JAKARTA (JP): As of yesterday, police were still looking for four men believed to be involved in a rape case on Tuesday in the Puncak resort area, West Java, City Police spokesman Lt. Col. Bambang Permantoro said.

Three girls, identified as Di, 23, Ri, 17, and Er, 16, were reportedly raped and beaten on Tuesday after they accepted an offer from four men to drive them home after a chance meeting on Jl. Melawai, South Jakarta.

East Jakarta police chief Lt. Col. Miyanto said on Thursday that the girls were not taken home but actually driven to the Puncak resort area where they were taken to a hostel and raped. Early the morning the victims were taken to a cemetery in East Jakarta where they were again raped.

Local police found the girls in separate places around the cemetery in the morning, one of them with cuts to her back. One girl was found in the Christian section of Pondok Rangon cemetery while the other two were found one kilometer further away, Miyanto said.

One of the victims was found lying unconscious at the cemetery, where she had been thrown from the car after she had been beaten. The other two were released by their captors and later related their fate to a passerby, Miyanto said.

Police know the type of car used by the abductors, Miyanto said, who added that the girls had been taken to the Kramat Jati Hospital, East Jakarta, where they were treated.

Bandit

In a related development, the city police are planning to start a massive operation against criminals in Greater Jakarta, code named Operasi Bandit 1995 (Operation Bandit 1995), soon.

City Police Chief Maj. Gen. Dibyo Widodo said on Wednesday that the operation was aimed at preventing and fighting crime in the capital city, especially during the upcoming celebrations of the golden anniversary of Indonesia's independence on Aug.17.

"Police will be holding many operations to make sure that security in and around the city is fully under control during the upcoming golden anniversary," Dibyo said.

According to Dibyo the operation is a follow-up of earlier ones, such as Operasi Kilat Jaya Emas, Operasi Rutin Kawasan Tertib Lalu Lintas, Operasi Bajing Loncat, and Operasi Zebra Emas.

During the current Operation Zebra Emas, which was launched on Aug.1, 4,067 violators have been ticketed.

City police spokesman Bambang said most of the violators disobeyed traffic signs, particularly along selected roads in "traffic order" zones.

"The number of traffic violators shows that police are getting close to meeting the target of netting 1,500 violators per day," Bambang said.

During the operation, scheduled to last 60 days, a total of 1,823 personnel from various institutions will be deployed. (01)
