Police Secure Suspected Mortar at West Sumatra Pavilion in TMII

The police have secured an object suspected to be a mortar at the West Sumatra Pavilion in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), Cipayung, East Jakarta, on Wednesday. The discovery of the suspected military ordnance was first reported by a local cleaner.

East Jakarta Metro Police Public Relations Head, AKP Made Budi, confirmed the incident. ‘It is true, an object suspected to be a mortar unit was found,’ he said.

Budi explained that the incident began when a cleaner at the West Sumatra Pavilion, Satria Ade Putra, was cleaning the area around 11:05 a.m. Western Indonesia Time. During his duties, he was startled by the presence of a metal object resembling a mortar.

The witness then reported the finding to the pavilion’s security officer, Eko Riyanto. After confirming the shape of the object, the security team immediately forwarded the report to the TMII management and the Cipayung Police.

‘Upon receiving the information, SPKT personnel led by Iptu Nurman Yusuf immediately went to the location to conduct sterilisation and install a police line. The Cipayung Police also promptly coordinated with the East Jakarta Metro Police standby unit and the Polda Metro Jaya Gegana bomb squad,’ he said.

At around 2:10 p.m. Western Indonesia Time, East Jakarta Metro Police personnel and the Inafis team arrived at the location to conduct initial identification. Shortly after, at 2:15 p.m. Western Indonesia Time, the Polda Metro Jaya Gegana team arrived at the West Sumatra Pavilion. The special team immediately carried out standard operating procedures for detonation and successfully secured the suspected mortar for further examination at the Gegana headquarters. Budi confirmed that the entire evacuation process was completed by 2:38 p.m. Western Indonesia Time, and the police have ensured that the West Sumatra Pavilion area in TMII is now sterile and the situation is safe and conducive.
