Police: Romance Motive Behind Attempted Kidnapping of Elderly Man in Penjaringan

Police in Metro Penjaringan, North Jakarta, have uncovered the motive behind the attempted kidnapping and assault of an elderly man identified as GH (70). The investigation revealed that the desperate act was triggered by a romantic issue that did not receive the blessing of the victim’s family.

The head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at Metro Penjaringan Police, AKP Sampson Sosa Hutapea, explained that the main suspect, identified as CW (31), felt hurt because his relationship with the victim’s child, CKH, was rejected. The rejection was based on the fact that CW was already known to have a wife and child.

“The motive of suspect CW, who involved FAP in the attempted kidnapping and assault of the elderly man GH, is suspected to be due to the unapproved relationship,” said AKP Sampson Sosa Hutapea in Jakarta, Monday (15/6/2026).

The incident began when CW invited his colleague, FAP (26), to go to the victim’s residence on Jalan Camar Permai 4, Kapuk Muara Urban Village. In the operation, CW acted as the driver, while FAP was the executor sitting in the back seat.

The pair monitored the situation and waited for the victim to leave his house for a walk. Upon spotting the target, FAP exited the car and attempted to forcibly pull the victim into the vehicle. However, GH put up a fierce struggle, leading to a tug-of-war that allowed him to break free.

Realising their target had escaped, the two perpetrators immediately fled the scene. To cover his tracks, CW replaced the vehicle’s licence plate using a screwdriver he had prepared beforehand.

After an investigation lasting more than a month, police officers finally apprehended both suspects. CW, the mastermind, was arrested first, followed by FAP, who was captured at a fitness centre in the Gold Coast Apartment complex in Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK).

For their actions, the two suspects are now being held in the Metro Penjaringan Police detention cells. They are charged with multiple articles related to attempted kidnapping and assault.

“Both perpetrators are charged under Article 17 and Article 18 in conjunction with Article 450 and/or Article 471 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code. The maximum prison sentence is 12 years,” AKP Sampson asserted.

This case serves as a reminder for the public to remain vigilant against potential criminal acts in their surroundings, especially those targeting vulnerable groups such as the elderly.
