Polda Metro Jaya has detained a number of people in connection with a public demonstration in front of the MPR/DPR building. Police said a group of rioters arrived after the protest had dispersed.

Head of Public Relations of Polda Metro Jaya, Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto, said the group came to the front of the MPR/DPR building to disrupt public security and order. He added that the rioters also threw various objects at security personnel.

“After the series of expressions of aspiration ended and most of the crowd left the location, a group of rioters emerged to disrupt the public security and order situation, attempting to carry out destruction, acts of vandalism, and throwing objects at officers,” Budi said during a press conference at his office in Jakarta on Friday (28/8/2026).

He said officers were able to handle the group of rioters. Officers took action against those responsible for the destruction.

“Officers then carried out several police actions to stop the vandalism and destruction, so as to mitigate and prevent the spread of disturbances and ensure the safety of the public around the location,” he said.

Hundreds of people were detained and taken to Polda Metro Jaya. They are currently being examined by the Directorate of General Criminal Investigation and the Directorate of Women and Children Protection and Trafficking in Persons at Polda Metro Jaya.

“Based on the data collection results, 322 people were detained for examination, comprising 162 adults aged 18 to 40 handled by the Directorate of General Criminal Investigation, and 160 children aged 12 to 19 handled by the Directorate of Women and Children Protection and Trafficking in Persons,” he said.

“As of now, all of them are still undergoing examination and none have been released,” he added.

It was previously reported that Polda Metro Jaya explained the destruction and arson that occurred around the Senayan area of Jakarta last night. Police said the violent acts were the work of a group of rioters or public order disruptors.

Senior Commissioner Budi explained that the situation at the location had escalated on Thursday (27/8) from late afternoon into the evening. He said some of the crowd that arrived were no longer those expressing aspirations, but rather those causing unrest by attempting to set fire to and push down the main fence of the DPR/MPR building.

“That was the work of a group of rioters or public order disruptors,” said Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto to reporters on Friday (28/8).

Budi Hermanto said the expression of aspirations by AMPB Pati concluded in the afternoon and the group had dispersed after meeting with DPR representatives. However, a group of people arrived and carried out acts of destruction and arson at several points.
