Police have revealed the reason why Hafiz Mahendra (HM), the driver of a Toyota Calya who drove recklessly and against traffic on Jalan Gunung Sahari, Central Jakarta, was found to be using fake license plates.

Central Jakarta Police Chief, Commissioner Reynold Hutagalung, said that officers on duty tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver immediately fled.

“He was suspected of using fake license plates on Jalan Gunung Sahari, so he was stopped by traffic officers Aiptu Basri and Aipda Jimber,” Reynold told reporters on Wednesday (25/2).

“He was afraid and fled, entering Jalan Gunung Sahari and driving against traffic from south to north,” he continued.

The driver continued to drive his vehicle to Jalan Bungur Besar and then turned left, driving against traffic towards the west. Upon reaching the MBAL intersection, the car again drove against traffic on Jalan Pos and then turned around at the MBAL intersection.

“Then he turned left on the opposite lane on Jalan Gunung Sahari and was involved in an accident with a motorcycle,” said Reynold.

Reynold said that they are currently conducting further investigations into the driver. This includes conducting a urine test on the individual.

“We will immediately conduct checks, especially urine tests and health checks on the driver, to see if there are any indications that he was using prohibited substances or substances that could cause him to drive recklessly or negligently,” he said.

It is known that the incident was recorded in a video and went viral on social media. One of them was uploaded to the Instagram account @jakarta.terkini.

In the uploaded video, a car is seen driving against traffic in the middle of quite heavy traffic. An officer is also seen trying to stop the vehicle.

In the video, the officer appears to be firing a pistol into the air as a warning for the car to stop.

However, instead of stopping, the driver continued to accelerate his vehicle while hitting several other vehicles, from motorcycles to cars.

The driver’s actions angered residents in the area. Residents were seen chasing the car while hitting it with helmets.

“A car became the target of an angry mob in the Pasar Baru Timur area, Central Jakarta,” the post read.
