Police reveal new method to reduce traffic violations among students

The Traffic Unit of the Barelang Police Resort has reported a decline in traffic violations among students in Batam, following the implementation of a traffic education curriculum in schools at the beginning of 2026. The programme aims to instil values of safety, discipline, and awareness through the education system. According to data from the Traffic Unit, the number of student traffic violations in the first semester of 2026 decreased compared to the same period the previous year. At the primary school level, violations fell from 98 to 79 cases. At the junior high school level, violations dropped from 1,386 to 462 cases, while at the senior high school level they decreased from 2,307 to 1,157 cases. The decline in violation numbers is evidence that education from an early age can build sustainable traffic awareness, said Traffic Unit Chief Kompol Afiditya Arief Wibowo. The traffic education programme was launched on 17 December 2025 and began implementation in January 2026 across 210 state schools in Batam, comprising 145 primary schools and 65 junior high schools. The material is integrated into the Pancasila and Citizenship Education subject. Prior to the rollout, civics teachers underwent training of trainers to deliver the content to students. The police hope this educational and preventive approach will foster a culture of orderly traffic behaviour from an early age, so that safety awareness grows not only at school but also in daily life.
