Police Reveal Movements of Acid Attack Suspects on KontraS Activist via CCTV
Police have presented CCTV recordings showing the movements of the perpetrators who threw acid on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus. Police stated that the suspects had been following the victim since leaving the office of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) in Central Jakarta.
“It began at 19:45 WIB, as monitored there, colleagues. The first video shows at 19:45 WIB the victim entering the YLBHI office to attend a podcast event. Then, subsequently, the victim is seen leaving the YLBHI office. And from the YLBHI office onwards, based on the CCTV we obtained, there was already someone following, an unidentified suspected perpetrator,” said the Director of Criminal Investigation of Metro Jaya Police, Commissioner Iman Imannudin, at Metro Jaya Police Headquarters, Jakarta, on Wednesday (18/3/2026).
Iman stated that the perpetrator monitoring at the YLBHI office signalled to other suspected perpetrators that the victim had left the YLBHI office. Then, another perpetrator, the executor of the acid attack, followed the victim.
“This is visible, colleagues, if we look at this, which we have marked—please play the CCTV. This is the one observing or mapping the situation at the YLBHI office for video one, then it’s also captured there after the signal that the victim has left, then followed by one motorbike ridden by two people whom we suspect as the executors,” he said.
The CCTV recording also shows the moment the victim refuels at a petrol station. Iman said the perpetrators dispersed to monitor from the petrol station until the attack location.
“Video two, when the victim is refuelling at the SPBU, also monitored on the screen—colleagues, pay attention to the one we marked in red. These are two people suspected of carrying out the execution at the scene later. There will be consistency between the clothing used and the vehicle used,” said Iman.
“After the SPBU, the position is already waiting. This is part of the suspected perpetrator group, the second vehicle monitoring the victim. This position is heading towards the scene,” he added.
The CCTV recording then shows the moment the victim was attacked with acid. The victim is seen pulling over his motorbike and screaming in pain.
“This is the executor perpetrator, whom we circled in red, turning around then passing by waiting. Now, the green one is the victim at the moment the liquid was thrown. The yellow one is the second motorbike ridden by another suspected network member of the perpetrator group,” he said.
Iman said the two motorbikes suspected of being the executors separated directions after the act. One motorbike went against traffic on Jalan Diponegoro and stopped on the side because it was suspected to have been splashed with acid.
“This is monitored on Jalan Diponegoro, this executor is suspected to have been hit by some of the liquid on parts of his body, so both of them tried to clean it with mineral water, as seen in the CCTV video,” he said.
When stopping, the CCTV recording shows the motorbike driver executor had already removed his blue batik shirt that he initially wore, now only wearing a red T-shirt, because it was suspected to have been splashed with acid. Iman said the executor wore two layers of clothing: a red T-shirt covered by a batik shirt before carrying out the acid attack.
“Now, colleagues, you can see the two in front wearing red T-shirts; we suspect the outer clothing has been removed because at the scene, he was wearing a shirt with a blue batik pattern. There will be a thread connecting it to our findings from earlier in the day before the incident,” said Iman.
“Because the outer T-shirt part is suspected to have been hit by the liquid and was removed by the perpetrator,” he added.
Iman said the CCTV recording shows the executor’s movements proceeding through the intersection towards Kramat Raya after the acid attack. He said another suspected perpetrator proceeded in a different direction, namely at the Matraman underpass.
“Then, one of them from the scene went straight without going against traffic; this is monitored at the Matraman Underpass. This is one of the vehicles that was together at the scene with the one who threw the liquid,” he said.
Iman said the CCTV recording also captured the moment the acid attack executor was not wearing a helmet. He said the helmet had been found not far from the incident location for laboratory testing.
“Furthermore, monitored in the second video, at 17:18 WIB, this also appears; we could capture a clip of the video showing the face of one of the executors who threw it, the one riding pillion on the vehicle,” he said.
Iman stated that the two acid attack executors are initialled BHC and MAK. He suspects the perpetrators number more than four people.
“Currently, we suspect and can inform that the two we showed earlier, from one Police data, one initial BHC, two initial MAK. However, from our investigation results, we do not rule out the possibility that the perpetrators could be suspected to be more than four,” he said.
