Police Reveal Motive of Man Who Stabbed Neighbour to Death in Central Jakarta

Police have arrested a man with the initials TA (23) after he stabbed his neighbour, AJ (35), in the Utan Panjang area of Kemayoran, Central Jakarta. The motive was revenge, as the perpetrator harboured a grudge because the victim had left him at an Islamic boarding school.

“He was resentful. He was just angry because when he was taken to the Islamic boarding school in Garut, he was left behind by the victim. So when they met, he got angry,” said Kemayoran Police Chief Kompol Agung Adriansyah when contacted by reporters on Tuesday (16/6/2026).

Kompol Agung explained that the victim had escorted the perpetrator at the request of the perpetrator’s parents. Being abandoned led to a misunderstanding, causing the perpetrator to become angry and hold a grudge against the victim.

“He was taken to the boarding school at his parents’ request. Being left behind meant there was a misunderstanding; he may have become somewhat emotional, angry, and resentful, for now,” he said.

Police are still investigating the reason the victim left the perpetrator. “That’s why it’s still under investigation, why he was left behind,” he clarified.

Previously, AJ (35) was reported to have been stabbed by his own neighbour, TA (23), in the Utan Panjang area, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta. The victim died on the way to hospital.

“That’s correct (the victim was stabbed by his neighbour). The victim died on the way to the hospital,” said Kompol Agung Adriansyah when contacted on Monday (15/6).

Agung stated there were two stab wounds on the victim’s body. The perpetrator has now been arrested. “Two stab wounds. We are currently processing the witness statements. The suspected perpetrator, TA, has been arrested,” Agung said.

Agung mentioned that the knife used by the perpetrator to stab the victim has been secured. Based on the preliminary investigation, the stabbing was triggered by a grudge. “The evidence is a knife. We are still investigating whether there was an element of planning. The motive is revenge,” he added.
