Police reveal how a former singer learned hajatan information in Serang for motor theft operations
Police in Serang have revealed how an ex-singer allegedly used information from a fellow performer to pinpoint hajatan (local celebrations) venues for motor vehicle thefts. The suspect, Dian, said she had joined the theft operation five times, with co-conspirator Kiming using the hajatan-themed events to target parked motorcycles. Dian reportedly dated one of the male suspects, who is married, while their relationship extends beyond romantic involvement. Serang Police Chief Andri Kurniawan urged hosts of hajatan celebrations to coordinate with police to safeguard events and prevent motor vehicle theft. He said: ‘Regarding security at hajatan events, please coordinate with the local police to arrange security with involvement from stakeholders and the surrounding community.’ The incident occurred on May 12, 2026, around 11:30pm in Kampung Rukem, Bandung Sub-district, Serang Regency, where the victim had just finished watching performances at a local hajatan. The victim reported the theft to Serang Police, who then pursued a gang specializing in vehicle theft at hajatan events. Initially, police arrested a man named Saedi on May 13 near a road in Jasinga, Bogor Regency, followed by the arrest of Suherman the next day at his home in Mekarjaya, Cigudeg, Bogor Regency. Andri explained that the two were involved in handling stolen goods or acting as receivers. The suspects admitted obtaining the stolen vehicle from an individual named Jimi alias Kiming. Police then arrested Jimi alias Kiming as he prepared to strike in Serang city with his girlfriend, Dian. The perpetrators were detained at a hajatan in Nyapah Ward, Walantaka District, Serang City, along with the girlfriend who participated in the theft. Andri noted that the suspects are recidivists in vehicle theft cases in the Banten region, having operated at 15 locations over the past three months and commonly targeting hajatan venues or public entertainments. The investigation continues. (aik/azh)
