Police Reveal Chronology of Confinement and Extortion at Central Jakarta Shop
The Central Jakarta Metro Police have revealed the chronology of a case involving the confinement, assault, and extortion of three men at a printing shop in the Senen area of Central Jakarta. Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief, Senior Commissioner Reynold E.P. Hutagalung, stated that the incident began with a report received on Friday (26/6) at around 9:00 PM Western Indonesian Time. “At that time, the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Central Jakarta Metro Police received an emergency report from the public through the police 110 call centre,” he said during a press conference at the Central Jakarta Metro Police headquarters on Monday. The information was immediately received by the Central Jakarta 110 operator and promptly followed up with the Patrol Unit and the investigation unit from the local sector police, namely Senen Police. A joint team arriving at the crime scene, Mauprint Printing Shop on Jalan Kalibaru Timur Number 182, Bungur Village, Senen District, found three victims being held captive. “The three victims were identified as Adit Saputra, Muhammad Rafli Jelani, and Tegar Saputra,” Reynold said. He explained that officers at the scene immediately carried out an evacuation to rescue the three victims for further examination. “Simultaneously with the evacuation, the police also swiftly apprehended seven suspected perpetrators who were at the location,” he said. Reynold detailed that the arrested suspects consisted of five men with the initials MML (40), AI (41), S (48), AYAL (29), NHJ (42), and two women with the initials CML (37) and II (36). “In carrying out their actions, the perpetrators used a modus operandi of confinement accompanied by physical violence. To prevent the victims from escaping or moving, the perpetrators shackled the three victims’ feet with homemade iron restraints coated with tyre rubber,” he stated. During their confinement, the victims were extorted by the perpetrators. One victim was even forced to hand over Rp55 million in cash via an ATM transfer to an account under the name of suspect II. From the scene, police seized a number of items used to confine the victims, including a one-metre iron chain, a steel sling cable, five padlocks of various brands with their keys, three iron foot restraints, a grinding machine, and a drill. “Currently, all seven suspects have been placed in the Central Jakarta Metro Police Detention Centre.” They are charged with multiple articles under the Indonesian Criminal Code Law Number 1 of 2023, namely Article 482 with a maximum penalty of nine years’ imprisonment, Article 446 with a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment, and Article 471 with a maximum penalty of six months’ imprisonment.
