Police Reveal Cause of Reckless Driver Fleeing and Colliding with Vehicles in Central Jakarta
Police have revealed the reason why the driver of a Toyota Calya, identified as HM (25), was driving recklessly and against traffic, causing collisions with several vehicles in Gunung Sahari, Central Jakarta. Police suspect that the driver was trying to escape because he feared being caught with several fake license plates and a sharp weapon in the car.
The Head of Traffic at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Kombes Komarudin, revealed that the car contained four pairs of different license plates, including the one being used. He also stated that a sharp weapon was found inside the car.
“Based on the facts we found, there were four pairs of license plates in the car, including the one being used, so a total of four different pairs. We also found two sharp weapons and a toy gun,” said Komarudin on Thursday (February 26, 2026).
This is believed to be the reason why the driver fled. The driver recklessly drove through a busy road, going against traffic. Several vehicles were hit by the driver.
“It is likely that this was the reason. It is unusual to drive against traffic in Jakarta. The driver drove against traffic on three different roads,” he said.
HM has now been named a suspect. He is charged under Article 311 of Law No. 22 of 2009 on Road Traffic and Transportation.
“For the traffic violation, the suspect is charged under Article 311, paragraphs 1, 2, and 3, for driving a vehicle in a manner that endangers other road users. If it reaches paragraph 3, the penalty is up to four years in prison,” said Komarudin.
