Police respond to roaming 'pocong' phenomenon: If there is any crime, we will act

Residents in Tangerang Raya and Jakarta have been unsettled by the roaming ‘pocong’ phenomenon, including reports of ‘pocong’ brandishing blades. The Metro Jaya Regional Police have also given the phenomenon attention.

Director of General Criminal Investigation at the Metro Jaya Regional Police, Senior Commissioner of Police Iman Imannuddin, said the force will act in accordance with the law if any ‘pocong’ commits suspected criminal acts. He stressed that there would be no double standards.

‘If within the pocong phenomenon there is suspected criminal wrongdoing, whether theft or perhaps intimidation using a sharp weapon or other acts of crime, we will enforce the law without discrimination,’ Iman said at a press conference at the Metro Jaya Regional Police Headquarters in Jakarta on Friday (22/5/2026).

Iman acknowledged that the pocong phenomenon has indeed unsettled residents. Therefore, authorities are educating the public to be more aware of their surroundings.

‘TCertainly, in mitigating the pocong phenomenon we must educate the public to be more attuned to the environment,’ he said.

Furthermore, the Police are preparing anticipatory steps as well as preventive measures to avert criminal acts linked to the phenomenon. The issue is currently circulating widely on social media.

‘We will implement anticipatory steps alongside educating the public to undertake preventive measures in relation to the pocong phenomenon,’ he added.
