Police Reform Commission Still Awaiting Prabowo's Availability
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Commission for Accelerating Police Reform is still awaiting President Prabowo Subianto’s availability to discuss recommendations for more effective police reform.
Chairman of the Commission for Accelerating Police Reform Jimly Asshiddiqie stated that the recommendations were completed two months ago.
“We want to move quickly; the recommendations have been finished for two months, but the President has not had time to receive the report. Yet, there are decisions that need to be made,” said Jimly during the launch of his book in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (21/4/2026).
He mentioned that the commission consists of five four-star police generals and several civil society figures, which made the civilian members hesitant to voice their opinions.
“We are ten members, five of whom are four-star generals, so us civilians were hesitant to speak,” he said.
On the same occasion, Commission member Mahfud MD said the recommendations were completed as of 2 February 2026.
Mahfud MD stated that Jimly had sent a letter requesting President Prabowo to summon the Police Reform Commission.
Moreover, he said, Jimly also offered to send the recommendation draft to Prabowo’s staff, but Prabowo refused due to concerns about leaks.
“During the fasting month, Pak Jimly met with the President personally. ‘Sir, we’ve sent a letter to be called. If you’re busy, we’ll just send the draft.’ The President said no. Don’t send it; it might leak,” said Mahfud MD.
Mahfud revealed one of the contents of the Commission for Accelerating Police Reform’s recommendations: Police Academy (Akpol) recruitment without any sponsored slots.
“What can be announced is just one: Akpol recruitment must not have any sponsorships from anyone,” he said.
He also highlighted the recruitment process for Akpol, which is reportedly dominated by children of officials, with only a small portion for the general public.
Mahfud explained that the Akpol recruitment without sponsored slots will be enforced through Polri regulations.
“Yes, that’s already announced. Whether it’s in the form of a Polri regulation or what, we’ll see,” he said.
