Police Reform Commission Proposes Limiting the Term of the National Police Chief

JAKARTA - The Komisi Percepatan Reformasi Polri (KPRP) recommends limiting the term of office of the head of the Indonesian National Police (Kapolri).

KPRP member and Presidential Special Advisor on Security, Public Order, and Police Reform, retired General Ahmad Dofiri, stated that the KPRP also proposes guidelines for police career progression.

“This will be regulated in terms of career path or career progression. Entry, there is (a recommendation to limit the Kapolri’s term),” said Dofiri at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday (5/5/2026).

“From the career path, for example, for officers, their 11-year positions would be specified, and so on; if regulated like that, it would then be around 2-3 years,” Dofiri added.

“But it cannot be locked; that is the President’s authority. However, the Polri organisation will prepare the career progression accordingly,” he continued.

Previously, KPRP member Mahfud MD revealed that the commission plans to propose to President Prabowo Subianto that the Kapolri position be limited to two years.

“We are only proposing guidelines that the Kapolri should be appointed for two years, but if still needed, it can be extended to three years,” he said in an interview on Monday (9/2/2026).

Mahfud explained that this suggestion is aimed at improving the career path for high- and mid-ranking officers in the Polri.
