Police raids net bullets and drugs

PALU, Central Sulawesi: In a search for explosive materials, the police raided on Monday two entertainment spots and found 26 bullets, 140 ecstasy pills and two packs of crystal methamphetamine.

The police arrested 17 people suspected of possessing the ammunition and psychotropic substance.

Chief of detectives Adj. Sr. Comr. Ricky F. Wakanno, who led the operation, code-named Maleo, said the police immediately sealed the discotheque, where they discovered the ammunition and drugs.

The police also locked up 10 customers of the discotheque and seven others from a karaoke house nearby. Their urine tests revealed traces of drugs, Wakanno said.

The 17 people came from various backgrounds, including a civil servant and students, to a truck driver. Five were women.

Police are giving consideration to recommending that the mayoralty administration revoke the permit of the discotheque following the raid. Previous raids on the disco had always failed to produce any incriminating evidence. -- JP
