Police quizzed for assaulting soldier

JAKARTA: Six police officers are being interrogated for allegedly assaulting an Army soldier in Sunter Agung, North Jakarta, on Tuesday night.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Tjiptono said on Wednesday that internal affairs were seeking further information on the incident.

The six officers -- whose identities are still being withheld -- were on duty to monitor fuel distribution in Greater Jakarta.

Reports said that the clash broke out after one of the police officers stopped a fuel truck in Sunter Agung. He was later involved in a dispute with a soldier who was in the truck.

Seeing their colleague fall from the truck, passing policemen came to the scene, accusing the soldier of beating their colleague. They later surrounded the truck and beat up the soldier. -- JP
