Police put end to unauthorized meet

YOGYAKARTA: The police closed a political meeting here Thursday when the committee failed to show them the necessary permit.

The meeting was held by the Yogyakarta chapter of the Association of Democratic People (PRD), which advocates a more open democratic system in the country.

A lecturer of the local Gadjah Mada University and a researcher were among the speakers in the meeting. The police arrived when lecturer Arif A. Mundayat, who is also PRD activist, was delivering his speech.

Two members of the organizing committee were questioned by the police yesterday.

A PRD activist told The Jakarta Post yesterday that they did not have to apply for a police permit to hold a meeting.

PRD, which was established in Jakarta last May, has recruited lecturers and university students as its members. (02/tis)
