Police punished for assault

KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: A police tribunal has disciplined four policemen for assaulting four students in Kupang, the capital of East Nusa Tenggara province.

Kupang Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Agus Nugroho said on Saturday the four police officers were handed down different punishment, including a 21-day jail sentence and postponement of a promotion.

The assault occurred last Saturday during a graduation ceremony at Widya Mandira Catholic University. The four students, riding motorcycles, attempted to leave campus after the ceremony, but were stopped by police who accused them of being drunk.

The verbal war soon turned into a scuffle, and the students were quickly overcome by the trained policemen. -- Antara
