JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: The police post in the mining town of
Tembagapura has been upgraded to a special precinct which also
oversees the newly inaugurated town of Kuala Kencana.

Chief of Irian Jaya Police Brig. Gen. Muharsipin told Antara
that the expansion of the Tembagapura, the center of a huge
mining operation, necessitates special police handling.

This will be the second police precinct in the Timika regency.
The first one oversees security and order in the Timika town
nearby.

The huge copper and gold mining operation is run by PT
Freeport Indonesia, an American-Indonesian joint venture. (emb)
