Jakarta (ANTARA) — National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has affirmed that the Indonesian National Police (Polri) will handle transparently the case of Mobile Brigade (Brimob) officer Brigadier MS, who allegedly assaulted two students in Southeast Maluku, resulting in the death of one of them.

“I believe matters such as these should be handled transparently,” Sigit said in a statement in Jakarta on Sunday.

Sigit confirmed that the police force has commenced an investigation and is conducting a thorough examination of the case.

Previously, Brigadier MS allegedly struck the head of a Southeast Maluku state Islamic secondary school (MTsN) student identified as AT (14), causing severe bleeding that led to his death.

The perpetrator, who is stationed at the Brimob Pioneer C Headquarters, also allegedly assaulted NK (15), AT’s older sibling, resulting in a bone fracture.

“The National Police are firmly committed to the law enforcement process and the code of ethics proceedings against the individual involved, in a transparent and accountable manner,” spokesperson Johnny said in a statement in Jakarta on Saturday.

Johnny said the police invited the victims’ family and all members of the community to jointly oversee the legal process against the police officer involved, to ensure it proceeds in accordance with prevailing legal principles, transparently and accountably.

Furthermore, the National Police issued a formal apology for the conduct of the individual officer, which was deemed inconsistent with the values of Tribrata and Catur Prasetya — the police force’s ethical codes — and which risks undermining public trust in the institution.

He conveyed deep condolences over the death of the victim in the incident involving a rogue police officer.

Johnny further stated that the National Police share in the grief and extend their empathy to the victim’s family over the incident.

The police also pledged to continue offering prayers and support to the victim’s family, wishing them strength and fortitude in facing the tragedy.
