Police officer stabbed to death

JAKARTA (JP): A police officer was stabbed to death by one of three men who attacked him after a heated quarrel on Jl. Inpres, Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta.

East Jakarta Police Chief Lt. Col. Nanan Sukarna confirmed the killing Saturday saying the alleged killer, identified only as IS, 25, had been arrested.

He said the attack on Darmadji happened Friday following a heated quarrel between the suspect and the victim over a traffic incident.

An unofficial source said they quarreled over a woman.

IS with two other friends then mobbed the victim. "They escaped after IS stabbed Darmadji in the stomach," Nanan said.

Residents in the area rushed the victim to a hospital but he died on the way, he said.

Nanan said the police picked up IS at a house near the scene of the crime. "We had to shoot him in the left leg because he tried to resist arrest."

The suspect was treated at the Kramatjati Police Hospital in East Jakarta.

East Jakarta police have been cleaning up the area, rounding up hoodlums since Friday trying to find the other suspects. (jun)
