Police officer neglects summons

YOGYAKARTA (JP): Lawyers of murdered journalist Fuad Muhammad Syafrudin are irate at the failure of police Sergeant Major Edy Wuryanto to appear at the Military Police Headquarters on July 15 for questioning over his alleged role in the killing.

Lawyer Budi Hartono from the Yogyakarta Legal Aid Institute demanded yesterday that the local police chief turn Edy over the military police.

"Edy has shown disrespect to the military police through his conspicuous absence," Budi told reporters.

Edy has been named as a suspect in the journalist's 1996 murder. His death is believed to have been related to his investigative reports on corruption in Bantul regency, which were published in Bernas newspaper.

The officer is suspected of covering up the case. Earlier this year Yogyakarta district court acquitted the man accused by police of killing Syafrudin. The case has since been reopened. (44)
