Police officer goes on a rampage, threatening residents with a sword and pistol in Garut, ends up beaten by a mob
An off-duty police officer went on a rampage while brandishing a sword and a pistol on Jalan Letjen Ibrahim Adjie, Tarogong Kaler district, Garut, West Java, on the afternoon of Tuesday, 19 May 2026. A video clip showing the man, believed to be under the influence of alcohol, circulated on social media, including the Instagram account @feedgramindo. In the footage, a man wearing a grey T-shirt and shorts is seen near a police service vehicle parked by the roadside. The man appears to be wielding a sword while shouting and hurling abuse at bystanders. Traders and locals can be heard shouting for him to put down the weapon he is carrying. The situation intensified as residents felt threatened because the suspect was also believed to be armed with a pistol. To stop the assault, some residents were seen using wooden beams to restrain him as he swung the sword toward people. In the video, several uniformed police officers can be seen nearby, but the emotionally charged crowd ultimately overpowered the man. The suspect was pinned to the asphalt and subjected to a mob beating before security personnel from Tarogong Kaler Police Sector arrived to detain him. Garut Police Chief AKBP Yugi Bayu Hendarto said the suspect is currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during the incident. “Because there are injuries. We will conduct an investigation afterwards,” Yugi told reporters on Wednesday 20 May 2026. According to information gathered, the suspect is known to be a member of the Indonesian National Police who serves within the West Java Regional Police.
