Police: No Violence During Mediation Between Alphard Driver and Security Guard

Police have stated that no acts of violence or beatings took place during the mediation between the driver of a Toyota Alphard and a security guard, following an incident in which the car ran a traffic light at a pelican crossing in front of the Pullman Hotel in Central Jakarta.

Head of Menteng Metro Police AKBP Braiel Arnold Rondonuwu also denied circulating information alleging intimidation, including claims that the security guard was asked to prostrate himself or threatened with the loss of his job.

“We are still looking into the information in circulation. So far there is no evidence of any beating or violence,” Braiel said in a statement on Thursday (23 July).

Nevertheless, Braiel invited any party who felt aggrieved or possessed evidence relating to the alleged intimidation and violence to come forward.

“If any party feels aggrieved or has other evidence, we invite them to file a report so that we can process it in accordance with applicable regulations,” said Braiel.

According to Braiel, the Traffic Enforcement Sub-Directorate of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police’s Traffic Directorate is also looking into suspected traffic violations committed by the Alphard driver, including the alleged use of vehicle number plates that do not conform to regulations.

Previously, a video circulated on social media showing a Toyota Alphard running a red light at a pelican crossing in front of the Pullman Hotel in Central Jakarta, leading to a verbal altercation with a security guard.

In the video, posted by the Instagram account @jakpus24jam.id, several pedestrians can be seen crossing at the pelican crossing after the traffic light had turned red for vehicles. However, an Alphard continued driving and ran the red light.

A security guard who was also crossing then reprimanded the Alphard driver. The driver was reportedly displeased with the reprimand.

“The security guard then admonished the driver by banging on the car window. The driver was unhappy with the security guard’s action and a verbal altercation ensued,” said Braiel.

Braiel said the two then went to the police post to seek assistance in resolving the matter through mediation. Subsequently, both parties agreed to make peace.

“The matter was resolved amicably through mediation assisted by the post commander at the Thamrin Police Post. After it was settled, the driver continued on his way and the security guard returned to work,” he said.
