Police mediate company dispute

JAKARTA: North Jakarta Police mediated a dialog on Thursday between PT Lancar Central Logistics (LCL) and drivers, who work for the company on a contractual basis.

Cilincing Police chief Comr. Eko Trisnanto said the drivers had been on strike for over a week, since June 14. "We tried a couple of times to hold talks, but the company executives refused, because, they said, the drivers had gone beyond their authority," he was quoted by Tempo News Room as saying.

The drivers, who are members of the National Transportation Workers Union, are protesting the company's policy of hiring them on a contractual basis, although some of them have worked for the company for almost 10 years.

Drivers at the company's offices in Bogor, Surabaya, Pemalang in East Java, and Cilegon in Banten, have expressed their readiness to join the strike. -- JP
