Tedi Sudrajante, Professor of Personnel Law at the Faculty of Law, Jenderal Soedirman University (Unsoed), believes that extending the retirement age for Indonesian National Police (Polri) members to 60 years is rational when considering the life expectancy of the Indonesian population. This view was shared during a discussion on the Revision of the Police Law in Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) on Tuesday (2/6).

Tedi explained that several comparative models can serve as references for determining retirement age. One such example is Malaysia, which has implemented a minimum retirement age of 60 since 2012. “There are several comparative models we can use. For instance, in Malaysia, there is a minimum retirement age implemented in 2012, so the average is indeed 60 years across the board,” said Tedi.

According to Tedi, retirement ages in Indonesia currently vary across different professions. TNI personnel have a retirement age range of 55 to 63 years, civil servants (PNS) generally retire between 58 and 60, while private sector employees can reach 65. “There is still an unclear range. However, if we examine Law Number 13 regarding the welfare of the elderly, we can agree that a rational retirement age based on life expectancy in Indonesia is 60 years,” he added.

In a separate statement, the Chairman of Commission III of the DPR RI, Habiburrokhman, noted that approximately 8 to 9 articles in the Police Law are slated for revision, including the retirement age. “Regarding the retirement age, it is being adjusted to modern demands, aligning it with the Attorney General’s Office and the TNI. Other revisions include adjustments to follow recent Constitutional Court rulings regarding positions held outside the force,” he stated.
