Police Investigation into Alleged Caustic Soda Attack on KontraS Activist Progresses with CCTV Analysis and Witness Interviews
Police have commenced an investigation into an alleged caustic soda attack against Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS). Authorities have gathered CCTV footage and are interviewing witnesses in the case.
“The collection of various digital evidence, including CCTV footage, is currently undergoing further analysis with the aim of identifying the perpetrator swiftly,” stated National Police Public Relations Director General Johnny Eddizon Isir to journalists at police headquarters in South Jakarta on Friday, 13 March 2026.
The alleged caustic soda attack occurred on Thursday, 12 March at approximately 23:30 local time on Jalan Salemba, Senen, in Central Jakarta. The victim, Andrie Yunus, remains hospitalised with severe burn injuries.
According to Isir, investigators have conducted in-depth interviews with witnesses present at the scene. At least two witnesses have provided initial statements, with the possibility of additional witnesses coming forward.
“The witnesses interviewed were those accompanying the victim and those who assisted the victim,” Isir explained.
Police have also requested preliminary medical reports to ascertain the extent of the victim’s injuries. Initial examinations revealed burns to several body parts: the chest, face, and hands.
The case is being handled under Police Report Model A Number 222/III/2026/Satreskrim/Restro Central Jakarta/Metro Jaya Regional Police, classified as aggravated assault under Articles 467(2) and/or 468(1) of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Indonesian Criminal Code.
The investigation is being conducted by the Crime Unit of Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police, with support from Metro Jaya Regional Police and the National Police’s Investigative Directorate. Isir stated that the investigation would be conducted professionally using scientific crime investigation methods.
“The National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, has given special attention to the handling and resolution of this case,” Isir added. “All investigative personnel will work seriously and diligently to bring clarity to this matter and apprehend the perpetrator, whoever they may be.”
Police have also appealed to the public for any information regarding the incident. Authorities assured that anyone providing statements would receive protection.
“We urge all members of society to pray for the recovery of the victim, who is currently receiving treatment at a hospital, and hope he soon reunites with his family and resumes his normal activities,” Isir concluded.
