Police Investigate Viral Video of Two Men Under Car in GBK Parking Area
Polda Metro Jaya, together with the Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police, is investigating a viral video showing suspicious activity by two men beneath a car in the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) parking area in Jakarta. The move is intended to determine whether any criminal offence was involved.
Head of the Vehicle Theft Sub-Directorate at Polda Metro Jaya, AKBP Noor Mangantara, said his team is currently tracing the whereabouts of the two men in the recording to seek clarification. Based on initial analysis, police suspect the pair are debt collectors.
“We have not yet found the individuals, but we suspect they are debt collectors. We are looking for them to seek clarification,” Noor said when contacted in Jakarta on Thursday (20/8).
Noor explained that, based on the circulating video footage, police have not yet found clear indications of a criminal offence. However, direct statements from the individuals are still needed to determine the motive behind their actions of going under the vehicle.
“If we look at their actions, there is no criminal offence yet. But we will clarify why they did it and for what purpose. Our suspicion is that this is a debt collector tactic to locate vehicles with overdue payments,” he added.
In the video uploaded by the Instagram account @kabarjakartaterkini, the incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday (18/8) afternoon. One man can be seen going under the car and is suspected of scraping the vehicle identification number, while his companion monitored the surrounding area.
Responding to public concern, Head of Public Relations at Polda Metro Jaya, Commissioner Budi Hermanto, urged residents to remain vigilant. He advised the public to avoid direct confrontation if they encounter suspicious activity, whether in residential areas or on the road.
“The public is advised to document the incident if possible and to report it immediately through the 110 emergency call service or by visiting the nearest police station,” Budi said.
As a preventive measure, Polda Metro Jaya is committed to increasing patrols and public security and order education to anticipate various street crime tactics within the Jakarta jurisdiction.
