Police Investigate Train Signalling Before KA and KRL Collision in Bekasi
Police are still conducting an in-depth investigation, including the possibility of issues with the signalling system or communication at the incident site,” said Head of Public Relations for Polda Metro Jaya, Kombes Budi Hermanto, to reporters on Thursday (30/4/2026).
To ascertain the exact cause, Polda Metro Jaya is collaborating with the Forensic Laboratory Centre (Puslabfor) of National Police Headquarters. The forensic team will examine various technical aspects, including electrical systems and train operational procedures.
“Puslabfor is on site to check if there are electrical factors or other disruptions affecting the train’s journey system,” he stated.
Additionally, police have examined several parties directly involved in train operations, including train traffic controllers (PPKA), signal officers, KRL drivers, the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek driver, and traffic controllers.
“Examinations are ongoing in Manggarai. A total of 24 witnesses have been questioned so far, with an additional seven people providing statements today,” he said.
Budi emphasised that the investigation is being conducted comprehensively to uncover whether the accident was triggered by technical factors, human error, or a combination of both.
The legal status of the case has been elevated to the investigation stage. Police identified criminal elements following a case review.
As is known, the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek collided with a KRL at Bekasi Timur Station on Monday (27/4) night. The incident resulted in 16 deaths and 90 others injured.
At the time of the accident, a Green SM taxi was stuck in the middle of the railway tracks not far from Bekasi Timur Station due to a short-circuit issue. The taxi was then hit by a KRL travelling from Cikarang towards Jakarta. The KRL involved in the accident with the taxi subsequently stopped in the middle of the tracks.
On the other hand, a KRL heading towards Cikarang was stopped at Bekasi Timur Station as a result of the incident between the Jakarta-bound KRL and the Green SM taxi. It was this stationary KRL at Bekasi Timur Station that was subsequently struck by the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek travelling from Jakarta.
