A video showing a car with a smashed window after being broken into by a thief in Ciputat, South Tangerang, has gone viral. Police have launched an investigation. From the circulating video, the left-side window of the car was shattered. The victim reportedly lost a bag as a result of the smash-and-grab theft. The incident occurred on Monday (15/6) at 11.00 p.m. Western Indonesia Time at a coffee shop. Police learned of the criminal act from social media posts. “Upon receiving the information, the Criminal Investigation Unit duty team, led by the unit head and deputy unit head, visited the crime scene,” said Ciputat Timur Police Chief Commissioner Bambang Askar Sodiq in a statement on Tuesday (16/6/2026). From the crime scene investigation, Bambang noted that the location had minimal supervision because the parking area was divided into two sections. According to him, the parking attendant was stationed at the front, in the motorcycle parking area. “The witnesses present during the crime scene investigation were not at the scene when the incident occurred; the witnesses who were present at the time of the incident only start work at 1 p.m. later. (From CCTV analysis), there was no one monitoring the area where the car was parked,” he said. Police are currently coordinating with the coffee shop management for further investigation. Officers have also contacted the victim to file a police report. A narrative circulating on social media suggested that the victim’s report was rejected. The victim and their friend claimed they had tried to report the incident to the Serua Police Post but were turned away. Commissioner Bambang corrected this information. He stated that the victim reported the incident to the Serua Police Sub-Sector Post and was directed to file a report at the Ciputat Police Station, as the matter pertains to a criminal offence. “Regarding the narrative of the report being rejected, we clarify that the night-duty officer at the Serua Police Sub-Sector Post directed the complainant to file a report at the Ciputat Police Station because the incident involves a criminal act,” he said. The Criminal Investigation Unit of the Ciputat Timur Police has conducted a crime scene investigation and is attempting to contact the victim. The Ciputat Timur Police are committed to being present and responding to all public complaints.
