Police Investigate Secret Recording of GIIAS 2026 Ushers, DPR Commission III Chair Urges Legal Action

The South Tangerang Police are investigating a case involving the secret recording of female ushers or sales promotion girls (SPG) at the GIIAS 2026 automotive exhibition. The recordings were used as material for a social media video titled ‘how to approach girls’. AKP Wira Graha Setiawan, Head of the South Tangerang Police Criminal Investigation Unit, confirmed that a cyber patrol had identified the content and an investigation is underway. The content creator, identified as Brian, has since posted a public apology on his Instagram account, stating he was merely being playful and did not intend any harm.

The case has drawn sharp criticism from Habiburokhman, Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR). He stated that secretly recording someone and using their image for commercial content without consent is a clear violation of the law. He cited Article 12 and 115 of the Copyright Law, as well as the Law on the Elimination of Sexual Violence, which prohibits electronic-based sexual violence, including the exploitation of a person’s body without permission. Habiburokhman also noted that the act violates the Electronic Information and Transactions Law regarding privacy rights and digital defamation.

Habiburokhman urged the victims to file an official police report with the South Tangerang Police, which holds jurisdiction over the exhibition venue. He assured that the House of Representatives Commission III would oversee the legal process to ensure it is handled firmly and professionally, aiming to create a deterrent effect for other content creators who might exploit individuals’ privacy and dignity for content.
