Police Investigate Scavenger Caught on CCTV Stealing Two Pairs of Shoes in East Jakarta

CCTV footage shows a scavenger stealing shoes in Utan Kayu Selatan, Matraman, East Jakarta, with the video going viral on social media. Police are investigating the theft in the residential area.

As seen in the video circulating on social media on Sunday (26/7/2026), a male scavenger carrying a sack was walking through an alley. When passing one of the residents’ houses, the scavenger spotted a shoe rack.

The scavenger then put down the items he was carrying and jumped onto the resident’s terrace. Moments later, the scavenger, who was wearing a cap and a black shirt, was seen stealing two pairs of the resident’s shoes.

A passer-by briefly became suspicious of the scavenger’s movements. However, the scavenger immediately left the location and managed to deceive the resident. The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday (21/7) in Utan Kayu Selatan, Matraman, East Jakarta.

When confirmed separately, Matraman Police Chief Kompol Suripno said his team is investigating the case. Suripno stated that the perpetrator’s actions have disturbed residents.

‘Yes, we are investigating. Anything that causes unrest in the community will be followed up so that similar incidents do not happen again,’ Kompol Suripno told reporters.

Police are currently working to identify the perpetrator before making an arrest. ‘We will follow up,’ he concluded.
