Police Investigate Motorcycle Fire After Refuelling at Ragunan Petrol Station

Jakarta - Police are investigating an incident in which an automatic motorcycle caught fire and was completely destroyed after the rider refuelled at a petrol station on Jalan Marga Satwa Ragunan, Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta.

“The victim filled up with approximately Rp20,000 worth of Pertalite at SPBU 34.12512 Jalan Marga Satwa Ragunan, Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta. After finishing refuelling, the victim immediately rode off on the black 2018 Honda Vario 150 with registration number B 4985 SFJ,” said Pasar Minggu Police Chief AKBP Anggiat Sinambela in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Anggiat stated that the incident, which went viral on social media, occurred on Wednesday afternoon at around 15:09 WIB. According to witness accounts at the scene, the motorcycle owner had just filled up with subsidised Pertalite fuel worth Rp20,000 before heading towards the petrol station exit.

However, a few metres after leaving the dispenser, bystanders shouted upon seeing flames emerging from the underside of the motorcycle. Hearing the shouts, the rider, identified as Aris Agung Nugroho (42), panicked and dropped the vehicle.

“Upon hearing the commotion, the victim panicked and immediately dropped the motorcycle he was riding. As the motorcycle fell, the flames grew larger and engulfed the victim’s vehicle,” he said.

Petrol station attendants at the scene quickly responded by extinguishing the fire using portable fire extinguishers. Despite their efforts, the intensity of the blaze meant the vehicle could not be saved and was completely gutted. Fortunately, there were no casualties and the fire did not spread to the petrol station facilities.

“The victim then went home, taking the remains of his burnt vehicle to his residence in the Pancoran area, assisted directly by his family,” he added.

Anggiat said his team immediately conducted a scene check after the video of the incident circulated widely on social media. “We promptly deployed personnel to examine the crime scene, gather witness statements, and review CCTV footage to determine the exact cause of the vehicle fire,” he stated.

He noted that when officers arrived at the location, the vehicle owner was no longer at the petrol station, having already taken the burnt wreckage to his home in Pancoran with family assistance. “Preliminary checks indicate the situation at the petrol station remains safe and conducive. There was no spread of fire to the station’s facilities, so a greater potential hazard was successfully prevented,” Anggiat said.
