Police Investigate KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2 Fire in Sumenep Using SCI Method
The Directorate of Water and Air Police (Ditpolair) of the East Java Regional Police has officially commenced the investigation phase into the fire incident involving the KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2 in the northern waters of Sumenep Regency, Madura. The initial steps are focused on gathering witness statements and operational document evidence from the vessel. East Java Police Director of Water and Air Police, Senior Commissioner Arman Asmara, stated that the case is currently under investigation. Authorities have conducted intensive examinations of several parties deemed to have knowledge of the chronology and departure procedures of the ship. “In this initial stage of the investigation, we have examined seven witnesses. The status is still an inquiry, the investigation has just begun,” said Senior Commissioner Arman Asmara on Wednesday (12/8). To uncover the exact cause of the fire, investigators will use the Scientific Crime Investigation (SCI) method. This method involves technical and scientific analysis to trace the entire operational process of the vessel, from the time it docked at the port until the fire broke out at sea. Arman emphasised that the number of witnesses is likely to grow as new facts are discovered in the field. Investigators will summon parties responsible for the loading process of vehicles and passengers at the port of origin. “The number of witnesses will continue to grow. It is hoped that from all the statements collected, the suspected cause of the ship fire can be clearly revealed,” he added. In addition to witness examinations, the investigation team is delving into various documents and other supporting facts. The investigation is confirmed to be examining not just one technical aspect, but the entire systemic chain related to the ship fire incident to determine whether there was an element of negligence or other factors.
