The Indonesian National Police (Polri) are currently investigating a hoax video related to a demonstration that has been circulating on social media.

“The team is currently carrying out an investigation. We will provide information in due course,” said National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The leader of the Bhayangkara Corps also reminded the public to share information that is consistent with the facts.

“Of course freedom exists, but do not do things that are violations, let alone create untrue news, or carry out actions that violate the law,” said Sigit.

It is known that a video of a demonstration taking place in Jakarta has been circulating on social media. However, the action shown in the video was an incident from last year.

Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago stated in a press conference that the video was a hoax.

According to Djamari, the video was deliberately uploaded to mislead the public with false information.

“I declare that video to be untrue. There is nothing like that in Indonesian territory, in our homeland there are hoaxes like that. Perhaps it happened in the past. At present and going forward, there is none,” said Djamari.

He also confirmed that the owners of social media accounts spreading hoax information about anarchist demonstrations could face criminal sanctions.

“We will find the account. If, for example, there are indications that it meets the provisions for criminal violations, we will take action and we will act firmly on that,” he said.
