Police are investigating several items suspected of triggering a fire at a house in the Tanjung Barat area of Jagakarsa, South Jakarta, which resulted in the death of Haerul Saleh, a member of Audit Board IV of the Financial Audit Agency (BPK).
The investigation follows the police’s processing of the crime scene at Haerul’s burnt house.
“Police have conducted scene processing and discovered items suspected of causing the fire. These found items are currently being examined at the National Police Headquarters Forensic Laboratory,” explained Head of Public Relations Section of the South Jakarta Metro Police Resort, AKP Joko Adi, when confirmed by Kompas.com via WhatsApp message on Sunday (10/5/2026).
“And the victim passed away at the scene,” Joko added.
Previously reported, Haerul Saleh, a member of Audit Board IV of the Financial Audit Agency (BPK), died after being found unconscious in his burning house in Tanjung Barat, Jagakarsa, South Jakarta, on Friday (8/5/2026).
Head of the South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-Directorate, Asril Rizal, stated that the fire was suspected to have been triggered by residual thinner from house renovations.
“The fire is suspected to have originated from remnants of thinner used in the house renovation,” said Asril when confirmed by Kompas.com on Friday.
The fire was immediately attempted to be extinguished by house security personnel and local residents using portable fire extinguishers (APAR), but they were unable to put it out.
According to the house guard, Harpen (36), Haerul was in his study on the fourth floor of the house at the time.
When reached, he was already not breathing and was immediately evacuated to the hospital.
“His condition… he was already unconscious. Probably due to the smoke, so he was unconscious; from outside, they said the smoke was black,” said Harpen when met at the location.
