Jakarta (ANTARA) — Police officers are investigating a case of condolence money theft carried out by a woman at Jalan Dukuh IV, Kampung Dukuh, Kramat Jati, East Jakarta.

“We are currently investigating a case of condolence-money theft in Kramat Jati by a woman,” said AKP Fadoli, the head of the Criminal Investigation Unit (Kanit Reskrim) of the Kramat Jati Police Sector, when contacted in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The suspect is believed to have carried out the act by pretending to know the deceased’s family to blend in with other mourners. “She carried out her action by pretending to know the family of the deceased and then blending with other mourners,” he said.

“While they were distracted, the perpetrator took the condolence money that had been kept, placed it into her bag, and fled,” he added.

Police have visited the scene to conduct initial investigations.

In addition to obtaining statements from the victim’s family and several witnesses, officers also checked CCTV around the location. “We have also checked at the scene to obtain statements from the victim’s family and view the CCTV,” Fadoli said.

As of now, police are still pursuing the suspect and investigating her identity. Fadoli also urged the public to stay vigilant, including when at funeral homes, ensuring that condolence money is handled by trusted individuals and supervised in rotation.

A woman is suspected of stealing condolence money by posing as a mourner at a funeral in the Kramat Jati area of East Jakarta.

The incident affected the Nyai Hasanah (45) family on Monday (2/3) around 12:30 WIB.

“Yes, the perpetrator is a woman, she said she would mourn, she knows us, and then all the condolence money disappeared, nothing left,” Hasanah said at the scene on Wednesday.

Hasanah recounts that the perpetrator had come since the morning when people were sparse and mourners had not yet arrived. Her mother-in-law died around 04:00 WIB, while the perpetrator arrived around 08:00 WIB.

The suspect even remained until just before the funeral. While at the house, she sat and occasionally watched the surroundings.

Because she felt the perpetrator knew her family, Hasanah did not suspect a thing. Finally, the perpetrator acted under the pretext of needing to use the toilet.

The family only realised the loss around 12:30 WIB. Residents briefly pursued, but the suspect had already fled.

The incident went viral on Instagram @info_cipayung. CCTV footage shows the suspect running out after carrying out the act at the funeral home on Jalan Dukuh IV, Kampung Dukuh, Kramat Jati, East Jakarta, Monday (2/3).

The alleged perpetrator is also claimed to have carried out similar actions at several places such as Jalan Damai Lubang Buaya on 22 December 2025 and Jalan Bambu Kuning, Bambu Apus, on 4 February 2026.
