The Tanjung Priok Police in North Jakarta are investigating the assault of a container truck driver by a group of individuals believed to be street musicians as he was passing along Jalan R.E Martadinata, Sunter Agung, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta.

“The victim was allegedly attacked because he refused a group of people who asked for a lift while crossing the railway tracks near the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) in the early hours of Wednesday (20/8),” said Tanjung Priok Police Criminal Investigation Unit Head AKP Handam Samudro in Jakarta on Friday.

Handam said that, based on statements from local residents, the assault took place on Wednesday (20/8) at around 1.00 a.m. Western Indonesia Time.

The incident allegedly began when several people asked for a lift. They are believed to have been street musicians, but the container driver did not give them a ride.

“The driver refused their request and the unidentified individuals threw stones at the driver,” Handam said.

The stones struck the victim, causing injuries to his head.

Officers who received the report immediately went to the scene and conducted a crime scene investigation.

Officers also examined several witnesses for statements and directed the victim to file a police report.

Unfortunately, based on residents’ accounts, no one recognised the individuals who had tried to hitch a ride on the container truck.

“We are continuing to pursue the perpetrators who caused the victim’s injuries,” Handam said.
