Police investigate apparent suicide

YOGYAKARTA: The Gunungkidul Police are investigating the apparent suicide of a 10-year-old girl who reportedly hanged herself at her house in Playen village, Gunungkidul regency, on Thursday.

"When we examined the girl's body we found some sort of injury on her cheek, which raised some suspicion," Gunungkidul Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Heri Purwanto said in Yogyakarta on Monday.

He said officer would question the girl's parents and other witnesses.

"The investigation has not been closed. As of today (Monday) we have not determined the cause of death, whether it was suicide or murder. We will intensify our investigation to get to the bottom of this case," he said.

Early media reports said the girl, who was in the fourth grade, committed suicide because she was afraid to go to school without her scout uniform, which was still wet from the night before. --Antara
