Police Investigate Alleged Mob Attack in East Jakarta
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Matraman Sector Police (Polsek) are conducting an investigation into an alleged mob attack that took place on Jalan Utan Kayu Raya, Matraman District, East Jakarta, on Saturday night (16/5).
“We are currently identifying the perpetrators through surveillance camera (CCTV) recordings around the scene of the incident,” said the Chief of Matraman Police, AKP Suripno, when confirmed in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The Criminal Investigation Team (Reskrim) of the Matraman Police has begun tracing the incident after a video depicting the alleged mob attack circulated on social media.
“We have been monitoring the situation; the criminal investigation team has identified the vehicle used and is checking supporting CCTV footage,” Suripno stated.
Nevertheless, the police have not yet been able to confirm the motive behind the suspected attack. According to Suripno, the authorities are still investigating the chronology and background of the event to uncover the cause of the violence.
“The motive is not yet known; we are conducting further investigations,” Suripno added.
The case has drawn significant public attention after video footage showing the alleged mob attack was widely shared via the Instagram account @info.jakartatimurr.
In the video, two individuals appear to be involved in the attack. One person is seen attempting to start a motorcycle, while another approaches the vehicle carrying a long iron bar. The atmosphere at the scene sounded tense, with shouts from several residents heard before the two individuals fled the location on a motorcycle. Before departing, one of the suspects was also seen discarding the long iron bar.
The video footage triggered various responses from netizens, who have called on the police to thoroughly investigate the incident.
As of now, there has been no official information regarding the identity of any victims or whether there were injuries sustained during the incident. The police have also not yet announced whether the suspects have been apprehended. The Matraman Police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with authorities gathering additional evidence, including CCTV footage and witness statements from the scene.
