Police intercept porn, pirated movies

MALAYSIA: Police arrested a man and seized pornographic and pirated movie discs worth about one million ringgit (US$263,000) that were due to be shipped to Indonesia and the Philippines, news reports said on Friday.

The seizures and arrest came in two separate raids on Thursday, carried out as part of a crackdown on Malaysia's rampant trade in illegal music and video discs and software.

Police stormed a house in the Petaling Jaya district of Kuala Lumpur, confiscating more than 54,000 video discs and arresting the 29-year-old occupant, The Star daily reported.

In a separate raid on a house in Cheras, south of the city, police seized more than 25,000 video discs worth more than 253,000 ringgit (US$66,000), including illegal pornographic movies, said Gingkoi Seman Pancras, a senior police officer.

Piracy of films and music is widespread throughout Asia, and Malaysia is a major production and distribution center. -- AP
